About
Upsilon Lambda
Omega Chapter
The idea of a graduate chapter came from Ms. Sheila Kyles, past International Undergraduate Member-At-Large, who recognized the need to service the southwest community of Dallas. Ms. Kyles, with the assistance of Ms. Adrienne Thomas, gathered with eighteen other excited members and was encouraged to organize a new chapter that would expand the presence and services of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated within the DFW Metroplex.
The first meeting of The Pearls of the Ivy Pride Interest Group was called to order on October 14, 1995, at 12:45 PM at the home of Ms. Thomas. Members discussed requirements for starting a new chapter and ideas for upcoming community service projects. The community service projects that were completed were: Voter Registration Drive, Salvation Army Angel Tree, and the Adopt-a-Student Mentoring Program.
On January 11, 1997, The Pearls of the Ivy Pride Interest Group became Upsilon Lambda Omega Chapter under the direction of the 20th South Central Regional Director, Dr. Polly Sparks Turner. These twenty women re-pledged their hearts, minds, and strength to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® and rededicated their continued service to all mankind.
Since it’s chartering with 20 members in 1997, Upsilon Lambda Omega Chapter has grown to nearly 250 members. The chapter is the home of the 2020 – 2024 Northeast Texas Cluster Coordinator, current and former Alpha Kappa Alpha International Committee members, and South Central Regional Officers and Committee Members.
